Where to Base
Wailea functions as a self-contained resort district. Most hotels are clustered along Wailea Alanui Drive, providing direct access to several award-winning beaches and the Wailea Beach Resort Marketplace. This concentration allows guests to walk to dining, shopping, and ocean activities, minimizing the need for transportation and maximizing relaxation time.
Getting Around
The primary gateway is Kahului Airport (OGG), located approximately 45 to 60 minutes away by car via the Hana Highway. Within Wailea, the layout is highly walkable, and many resorts offer complimentary shuttles to nearby beaches and shops. While renting a car provides flexibility for exploring beyond the immediate area, it is often unnecessary for guests staying strictly within the resort zone.
Best Season
Wailea enjoys warm weather year-round, but the dry season from April to October offers the most reliable sunshine and calmer ocean conditions, ideal for swimming and beach lounging. Winter months (November to March) bring larger swells and higher rainfall, which can limit some water activities but offers a lush, green landscape. Hotel travelers should consider their preference for beach activity versus scenic variety when booking.
