Where to Base
The village sits centrally in the Glemmtal Valley, flanked by the Kitzbühel Alps. Staying here offers tranquility while providing convenient proximity to the main valley towns. Your western neighbor, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, is the valley's hub, while Maishofen lies to the east. This central location allows easy access to both the Oberer Gernkogel to the southwest and the Schmittenhöhe to the southeast, making it an excellent base for exploring the region's natural beauty without being in the busiest tourist centers.
Airport Connection
Viehhofen does not have its own airport. The nearest major international gateway is Salzburg Airport (SZG). Given its location in the Glemmtal Valley surrounded by mountains, direct public transport options may be limited. Travelers typically rely on car rentals or regional train and bus connections from Salzburg or nearby hubs like Zell am See. Expect a drive of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours or more depending on traffic and weather conditions, so plan for ample transit time when connecting from the airport.
Best Season
Viehhofen is a year-round destination. Winter brings excellent skiing opportunities, leveraging the nearby slopes of the Pinzgau Grass Mountains. Summer is ideal for hiking and mountaineering, with trails leading up to peaks like the Oberer Gernkogel (2,175 m) and the Sausteige (1,912 m). The latter is notable as the origin of the boar depicted on the village coat-of-arms. Whether seeking winter sports or summer alpine exploration, the surrounding geography supports diverse outdoor activities throughout the seasons.
