Santa Marta

Santa Marta, officially the Historic, Cultural & Tourist District of Santa Marta, is a historic port city on Colombia's Caribbean coast and the capital of the Magdalena Department. Founded in 1525, it stands as Colombia's oldest surviving city and the second-oldest in South America. Located on a bay of the same name, it serves as a prime tourist destination in the Caribbean region, offering a blend of colonial heritage and tropical scenery. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, Santa Marta provides a unique base for exploring the region's history and natural beauty, distinct from the busier hubs of Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Soledad.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Santa Marta’s main airport is Simón Bolívar International Airport (SMR), about 16 km south of the historic centre. There is no train or metro. The simplest first-arrival option is an official airport taxi or pre-arranged hotel transfer; expect roughly 25-45 minutes to Centro depending on traffic, less to Bello Horizonte/Pozos Colorados and often 15-25 minutes to El Rodadero. Urban buses operated under the city bus system serve the airport/nearby corridor and are cheaper but slower and less convenient with luggage; allow about 45-70 minutes to the centre.

Around the city

Santa Marta has no metro. Local movement is by city buses/busetas under the STU/SETP system, yellow taxis, ride-hailing where available, and walking in compact areas such as Centro Histórico. There is no essential tourist transit card or pass; buses are generally paid per ride, so carry small cash. Use taxis or transfers after dark, for luggage, or for cross-town trips to Rodadero, Taganga, Minca, or Tayrona access points; confirm the fare before boarding if no meter/app price is used.

Loyalty program coverage

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Focus your stay in the Historic Center or along the Bay. The Historic Center offers proximity to colonial architecture and cultural sites, while the bayfront area provides a relaxed atmosphere. Both locations serve as excellent bases for exploring the city's heritage and accessing local amenities without needing extensive transit.

Getting Around

As a compact port city, Santa Marta is easily navigable. The historic center and bayfront areas are walkable, allowing guests to explore key cultural sites on foot. For longer distances within the urban area, taxis are readily available. The city's layout facilitates easy access to its primary attractions, making it convenient for travelers staying in central hotels.

Best Season

Santa Marta enjoys a tropical climate year-round, making it a viable destination for hotel stays at any time. However, the drier seasons generally offer more comfortable conditions for exploring the historic district and enjoying the coastal setting. Travelers should plan ahead during peak tourist periods to secure preferred accommodations, given its status as a major Caribbean tourist hub.
