Patras

Patras, Greece's third-largest city, serves as the capital of Western Greece and a vital commercial hub on the northern Peloponnese. Known as the "Gate to the West," its busy port facilitates trade and travel with Italy and the rest of Western Europe. Built at the foot of Mount Panachaikon and overlooking the Gulf of Patras, the city boasts a four-millennia history, including its significance as the site of Saint Andrew's martyrdom and its designation as European Capital of Culture in 2006. Patras hosts one of Europe's largest carnivals every February, drawing hundreds of thousands with its satirical floats and Mediterranean festivities. Home to three public universities, it is a major scientific center with a strong focus on technological education. The Rio-Antirrio Bridge connects the city to mainland Greece, enhancing accessibility. For frequent travelers, Patras offers a blend of historical depth, academic vibrancy, and strategic connectivity, making it an excellent base for exploring the region.
