Tverskoy / Red Square
Central, landmark-heavy, busy and convenient

Moscow, the capital and largest city of Russia, stands on the Moskva River in Central Russia. With over 13 million residents within city limits and more than 21.5 million in its metropolitan area, it is the most populous city entirely in Europe and the largest by land area on the continent. As the northernmost and coldest megacity in the world, Moscow serves as the political, economic, cultural, and scientific center of Russia and Eastern Europe. First documented in 1147, it has been the capital through various eras, including the Tsardom, the Soviet Union, and the modern Russian Federation. The city boasts one of the world's largest urban economies and hosts major global events like the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Visitors are drawn to its stunning Russian architecture, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Red Square, Saint Basil's Cathedral, and the Moscow Kremlin, alongside the modern skyscrapers of the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow's main airports are Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO). From SVO, Aeroexpress rail runs to Belorussky Station in roughly 50 minutes, then use the metro. From DME, Aeroexpress runs to Paveletsky Station in about 45-50 minutes; buses also link to Domodedovskaya metro but are more traffic-dependent. VKO is now directly on the Moscow Metro at Aeroport Vnukovo, usually about 45-60 minutes to central interchange stations depending on transfers. Official taxi or app taxi is easiest with luggage, commonly 45-90+ minutes depending on traffic; avoid unsolicited taxi touts in arrivals.

Use the Moscow Metro first: it is extensive, frequent and usually the fastest way across the city, with the MCC ring line, MCD suburban lines, buses and trams filling gaps. Buy or load a Troika card for metro, MCC, MCD central zones, buses and trams; contactless bank cards may work, but foreign cards can be unreliable, so carry a backup payment method. Stations can be deep and transfers long, so allow extra time, follow line colors/numbers, and use Yandex Maps or the Moscow Metro app for routing.

For first-time visitors, staying near the Kremlin and Red Square offers walkable access to major historical landmarks. Business travelers may prefer the Moscow International Business Center, home to Europe's tallest skyscrapers and a major financial hub.
Moscow's extensive metro system is efficient and connects key hotel districts with major attractions. Given the city's vast size (over 2,500 sq km), combining metro rides with taxis is recommended for optimal travel efficiency.
Summer offers mild weather ideal for exploring outdoor sites, while winter provides a unique experience of snow-covered landmarks and festive atmospheres. As the northernmost megacity, prepare for cold temperatures year-round, especially in winter.
