Maha Sarakham

Maha Sarakham, affectionately known locally as Sarakham, serves as the capital of Maha Sarakham Province in Thailand’s northeastern Isan region. Situated on the southern Khorat Plain along the Chi River, the city is nestled within a fertile rice-growing area. Historically recognized as a regional educational hub, it has earned the moniker "Taxila of Isan," referencing the ancient center of learning. The city is home to six colleges, including Mahasarakham University (MSU) and Maha Sarakham Rajabhat University, fostering a vibrant student culture that infuses the downtown campus areas and the vicinity of MSU's second campus at Kham Riang with a youthful, cosmopolitan energy. Once considered one of the poorer cities in Isan, Maha Sarakham has undergone significant transformation driven by its expanding student population. Today, the city boasts modern amenities such as two cinemas, a contemporary department store, and branches of major retail chains. Extensive construction, particularly on the eastern fringes, reflects this ongoing development. For hotel travelers, the city offers a unique blend of academic charm and emerging urban convenience. While it lacks its own airport or railway station, connecting via express bus or road to Khon Kaen and Roi Et airports is straightforward, with recent upgrades to the southern road link providing smooth dual-carriageway access. This makes Maha Sarakham an accessible and increasingly attractive base for exploring the cultural and educational heart of Isan.
