Korčula

Korčula is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, known for its well-preserved medieval Old Town and unique local Grk white wine, which is produced exclusively on the island. With an area of 279 km² and a population of over 15,000, it is the second most populous Adriatic island after Krk. The island lies just off the Dalmatian coast and offers a compact, walkable environment ideal for travelers seeking cultural immersion and relaxation. The local population is predominantly ethnic Croatian, preserving a strong sense of tradition. While the island is twinned with Rothesay in Scotland, its primary appeal lies in its authentic Dalmatian character, limited-edition wines, and historic architecture. For hotel travelers, the island provides a serene alternative to busier coastal destinations, with a focus on heritage and local produce.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Stay within or immediately adjacent to the medieval Old Town. This area is compact and walkable, placing you steps away from historic sites, local taverns, and the main ferry port. Avoid staying in outlying villages if you plan to explore the island's heritage sites on foot, as the Old Town's narrow streets and stone pavements are best navigated from a central base.

Airport Connection

Korčula has no airport. The nearest major airports are in Dubrovnik (DBV) and Split (SPU). From these hubs, travelers must take a ferry or high-speed catamaran to reach the island. Ferry journeys typically range from 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the departure point and vessel type. Plan for this transfer time when booking flights to ensure a smooth arrival.

Best Season

The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of May and September-October. The weather is pleasant for walking the Old Town's stone streets, and the crowds are thinner than in peak summer. Summer months (June-August) offer the best beach weather but bring higher temperatures and tourist density. Note that Grk wine is a limited local production, so visiting during harvest or wine festivals can enhance the experience.

Along the Old Town promenade, the open-air service overlooks the Pelješac channel and the islands of the Korčula archipelago, shaded by large Calabrian pines that add to the atmosphere. The cuisine, Mediterranean, classic and straightforward, is entrusted to chef Ivan Uglik who, with his commitment and knowledge of the craft, carries on the restaurant's usual high standard, focusing on high-quality regional and seasonal products. In addition to the classic five-course tasting menu, you can choose from a three- or four-course à la carte selection or opt for a five-course vegan menu. The small b
