The Millbrook Inn

Restaurant££7.3 km

Whilst the narrow lane getting here can be a challenge, once you arrive it feels like you’ve discovered a tiny utopia. Situated in the most delightful hamlet, this characterful pub fits in perfectly among the bucolic cottages. The concise menu never overcomplicates things, with honest, ingredient-led dishes that are all the more appealing for their simplicity. Fine produce is at the heart of it all, with lamb and beef coming from the owners’ Fowlescombe Farm 10 miles away – and crab from Salcombe just up the road. You can stay the night in one of their two nearby cottages.

The Refectory

Restaurant£££12.5 km

A small piece of a much bigger picture, The Refectory is a cosy 18-seater restaurant occupying a rustic new-build barn on the 500-acre Fowlescombe Farm, which has the sprawling feel of an estate and even includes a former manor house now cradled by verdant ivy. The menu utilises produce from the estate, including their own Longhorn cattle and Manx Loaghtan sheep, while the nearby coastline provides the likes of meaty monkfish packed with natural flavour. To get the full countryside experience, stay overnight in one of the 10 smartly dressed suites.
