Getting there & around

From the airport

Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) is the main airport, about 7 miles north of Kailua-Kona and about 25 miles from Waikoloa. There is no train or metro. Taxi, rideshare, rental car, and pre-arranged shuttle are the easiest options; expect roughly 15-25 minutes to Kailua-Kona in normal traffic. Hele-On buses serve KOA on limited schedules, including Route 202 and several island routes; use them only after checking the current timetable. Hilo airport (ITO) is across the island and usually 2+ hours by road, so it is not ideal for a Kona hotel unless flights require it.

Around the city

Kailua-Kona has no metro. Hele-On is Hawaiʻi Island’s public bus system; useful visitor routes include 201 along Aliʻi Drive, 202 for Central/North Kailua-Kona and KOA, and 204 toward South Kona/Captain Cook. Hele-On is free for all passengers through December 31, 2028, so tourists do not need a fare card or pass. For beaches, coffee farms, volcano trips, and resort-to-resort travel, a rental car is often the most practical choice. Around Historic Kailua Village, walking works well; sidewalks and shade become patchier farther out.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base: West Side Hub

Choosing Kailua-Kona as your base places you in the heart of the island's tourism industry. Located on the drier leeward side, it offers a more comfortable climate compared to the windward east coast. The area is the center of commerce, providing easy access to restaurants, shops, and cultural sites, making it ideal for travelers seeking convenience and relaxation.

Getting Around: Airport Proximity

Kailua-Kona is served by Kona International Airport, located just to the north in the adjacent CDP of Kaiminani. This close proximity ensures quick and convenient transfers for hotel guests, minimizing travel time between the airport and your accommodation. The efficient connection allows frequent flyers to maximize their leisure time without lengthy commutes.

Best Season: Year-Round Appeal

Due to its location on the leeward side of the island, Kailua-Kona enjoys a drier and sunnier climate compared to the rest of Hawaii. This makes it an excellent year-round destination for hotel travelers. The favorable weather conditions allow for consistent enjoyment of outdoor activities, poolside relaxation, and exploration of the local area throughout the entire calendar year.
