Where to Base
Stay within the ancient city walls for the best experience. This area places you close to the Ayasofya Mosque and key historical sites, allowing for easy walking access to the town's cultural heart. The atmosphere is tranquil and deeply rooted in history, ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of Istanbul or Bursa.
Getting Around
Access is primarily by road. While only 90 km from Istanbul as the crow flies, the drive is 200 km around the Gulf of İzmit, taking roughly two hours. It is about 80 km (one hour) from Bursa. There is no major international airport directly serving Iznik; most visitors fly into Istanbul (IST/SAW) or Bursa (BZJ) and transfer via car or bus. Once in town, the historic center is compact and best explored on foot.
Best Season
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the extensive city walls and exploring the open-air historical sites. Summer can be warm, but the lake setting provides scenic beauty. Winter is quiet and less crowded, perfect for travelers who prefer solitude and wish to focus on indoor attractions like tile workshops and the mosque without the heat of the day.
