Herne Bay

Herne Bay is a seaside town on Kent's north coast, located just 6 miles north of Canterbury. Historically a prominent Victorian resort, it boasts the world's first freestanding purpose-built Clock Tower (1837) and the site of once the UK's second-longest pier. While its popularity as a holiday destination has waned due to increased foreign travel and flooding challenges, the town retains a quiet charm and rich maritime heritage. For hotel travelers, it offers a peaceful base to explore the nearby ancient villages of Herne and Reculver, or to enjoy the scenic coastline. It is ideal for those seeking a slower-paced, historically rich experience in South East England, away from the bustle of larger cities like London or Canterbury.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Stay near the seafront to access the historic Clock Tower and promenade easily. Hotel options are limited within the town itself, so consider it a quiet coastal retreat rather than a primary hub. It serves best as a base for exploring nearby Canterbury (6 miles south) or Whitstable (4 miles west), offering a peaceful seaside atmosphere for travelers seeking relaxation away from major urban centers.

Getting Around

There is no direct airport connection; travelers typically fly into London or nearby regional airports and take trains or buses to Herne Bay. The town is compact and walkable, allowing easy access to key sights like the Clock Tower and the former pier site. For exploring the surrounding countryside and neighboring villages such as Reculver, renting a car or cycling is recommended, as public transport links are primarily focused on connecting to Canterbury and Whitstable.

Best Season

Late spring through early autumn offers the most pleasant weather for strolling along the seafront and visiting outdoor historical sites. Winter months can be windy, and the town has faced flooding issues in the past which may impact accessibility or redevelopment efforts. Travelers seeking tranquility might prefer off-peak seasons, but should check local conditions. The mild summer climate enhances the experience of exploring the Victorian-era architecture and coastal views without the crowds of busier resorts.

Fordwich Arms

Restaurant Michelin£££8.1 km

England’s smallest town is a pretty little place and this elegant Arts and Crafts-style building fits it perfectly. It sits in a delightful spot beside the river and its wisteria-covered terrace affords wonderful views. An impressive wood-topped bar and open fires welcome you in and the wood-panelled dining room bursts with charm. The cooking is modern, creative and sometimes playful but this is never at the expense of flavour, thanks to the excellent ingredients used to power dishes like South Coast turbot with a superb vin jaune and dashi butter sauce.

Whitstable Oyster Company

Restaurant£££7.2 km

One of those wonderful restaurants that 'does what it says on the tin', this family-run spot does indeed specialise in Whitstable Oysters, produced right outside the restaurant in the family's own oyster farm. Fresh and pure, they are a must-order and are available in a number of ways including natural, 'Royale' and 'Rockefeller'. The rest of the menu is as seafood-centric as you'd expect, with minimal adornment applied to the latest catch, be that gilthead bream or Dover sole. A large terrace and tremendous views over the estuary are the icing on the cake.
