Base in the Old Town
Stay in the Old Town (Qyteti i Vjetër) for the most authentic experience. This area concentrates the distinctive stone houses and is within walking distance of key sites. Note that streets are often paved with stone, adding to the historic charm but requiring comfortable footwear.
Transport: No Direct Airport
There is no airport in Gjirokastër. The nearest international airports are Corfu (CFU) in Greece or Tirana International Airport (TIA) in Albania. Travel from Tirana typically involves a bus or car rental, taking approximately 3-4 hours. Plan ground transportation in advance as direct flights are not available.
Highlights: Fortress & Festivals
The Gjirokastër Fortress overlooks the city and hosts the National Folk Festival every five years. Summer is the best time to visit, offering pleasant weather to explore the stone houses and enjoy the panoramic views of the valley. The fortress itself is a key attraction accessible from many central hotels.
