Where to Base
Accommodations are primarily concentrated in Chora (the capital) and Armenistis. Chora offers traditional stone-built hotels with easy access to tavernas and shops, providing a vibrant yet historic base. Armenistis, located just below Chora, features quieter resorts and beachfront properties, ideal for travelers seeking relaxation and direct access to swimming spots without the hustle of the main town.
Getting Around
There is no airport on Amorgos; visitors must fly to Athens and then take a ferry, which can take several hours depending on connections. Once on the island, public transport is limited. Renting a car or using taxis is highly recommended to navigate the winding roads and reach dispersed attractions such as the Monastery of Hozoviotissa, Matapata Beach, and the remote villages efficiently.
Best Season
The best time to visit is between May and October. Summer months offer hot, dry weather perfect for swimming and beach lounging, though accommodations book up quickly. Spring and autumn provide milder temperatures, ideal for hiking the island's trails and visiting historical sites like the ancient Acropolis of Arkesini with fewer crowds and a more peaceful atmosphere.
