Adalar

Adalar, officially known as the Princes' Islands, is a unique archipelago district within Istanbul Province, situated in the Sea of Marmara. Comprising nine islands, including the four main ones: Büyükada, Kınalıada, Burgazada, and Heybeliada, this area offers a distinct escape from the bustling metropolis of Istanbul. With a total land area of just 11 km² and a permanent population of approximately 16,690, it is the least populous district in Istanbul. The islands are renowned for their car-free environment, preserving a serene atmosphere where visitors can explore well-preserved 19th-century Ottoman wooden villas, hike scenic trails, and enjoy coastal views. For hotel travelers, Adalar represents a niche destination focused on tranquility, historical charm, and a slower pace of life, making it ideal for those seeking a retreat from urban intensity while remaining accessible from Istanbul.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Base your stay on Büyükada for the best balance of amenities, dining, and ferry connectivity. Kınalıada is a quieter, more budget-friendly alternative. Burgazada and Heybeliada offer serene environments ideal for relaxation, though they have fewer services. Choose based on your preference for activity versus tranquility.

Getting Around & Arrival

Access is exclusively via ferry or speedboat from Istanbul's ports (Kabataş, Karaköy, Bostancı). Once on the islands, private cars are banned. Transportation relies on bicycles, horse-drawn carriages (fayton), and walking. This restriction enhances the peaceful atmosphere but requires planning for mobility.

Best Season

The optimal visiting period is from May to October when weather is pleasant and ferry schedules are frequent. Summer months attract more tourists, so spring and autumn offer a better balance of good weather and lower crowds, enhancing the peaceful island experience.
