Staying in Uganda

Uganda, known as the 'Pearl of Africa,' offers a unique blend of business travel and world-class ecotourism. Centered around the capital, Kampala, the country features a robust selection of international and local hotels catering to both corporate and leisure travelers. As a landlocked nation in East Africa, it serves as a gateway to the African Great Lakes region and the Nile Basin. Travelers can expect a varied equatorial climate and diverse landscapes, ranging from urban centers to mountainous regions home to endangered gorillas. While road transport is the primary mode of domestic travel, the country's growing infrastructure supports efficient connectivity between key business hubs and tourist destinations. For frequent flyers, Uganda presents an emerging market with significant potential for loyalty program engagement, particularly among major global chains operating in the capital and key tourism zones.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is the primary international gateway, located south of the capital, Kampala. Domestic transport relies heavily on road networks connecting major cities and tourist destinations. While air connectivity is limited, overland travel offers access to the country's diverse landscapes. Travelers should plan itineraries carefully, as infrastructure varies across regions.

Accommodation Layout: Urban & Eco

The accommodation sector is centered in Kampala, offering numerous international chain brands and upscale business hotels. For eco-tourists, high-end lodges and resorts are distributed around national parks in the western and northern regions. This layout allows business travelers to enjoy urban convenience before easily transitioning to natural attractions, achieving a perfect balance between work and leisure.

Loyalty Landscape

International hotel groups such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG have a significant presence, particularly in major cities like Kampala. These brands offer standard points earning and redemption experiences for frequent flyers. As tourism grows, local boutique hotels are increasing, but international chains remain the preferred choice for travelers seeking consistency and reward accumulation.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Uganda offers an electronic visa system, facilitating applications for travelers from most countries. It is recommended to visit the Uganda Immigration Department website or consult the nearest embassy/consulate before travel for the latest visa requirements and fees. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months and has blank pages.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe-water and food precautions; standards vary by place. Malaria risk is countrywide, and mosquitoes/ticks can also transmit dengue, Zika and other illnesses, so pack repellent and bed-net awareness. Avoid swimming/wading in untreated freshwater due schistosomiasis risk. Heat, strong UV and high elevations such as the Rwenzori can affect pacing. Check current outbreak notices; CDC listed enhanced precautions for Bundibugyo virus disease as of mid-June 2026.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be current on routine vaccines such as MMR, polio, Tdap, flu, varicella/shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and yellow fever for Uganda; yellow-fever vaccination proof is required for arriving travelers aged 1 year or older. Discuss malaria prevention medicine, meningococcal vaccine for relevant dry-season areas, rabies for animal/remote exposure risk, and cholera only for localized-risk itineraries.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM works best through international travel-eSIM providers; do not assume every local shop can issue a local eSIM. Main local networks are MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda, with UTel/Lycamobile smaller. Tourist-friendly connectivity is usually a registered prepaid SIM or data bundle from MTN/Airtel at Entebbe or in major towns; bring an unlocked phone and passport for SIM registration.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
