Staying in Swaziland

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is the last absolute monarchy in Africa, nestled between South Africa and Mozambique. Despite its small size, the country offers diverse landscapes ranging from the cool Highveld to the hot Lowveld. Mbabane serves as the executive capital and primary business hub, while Lobamba holds the legislative role. For frequent travelers, Eswatini presents a compact destination with unique cultural heritage, making it suitable for short-stay business trips or cultural exploration. The economy is closely tied to South Africa, influencing transport and connectivity patterns.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

International travelers typically enter via Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa or King Mswati III International Airport near Manzini. Due to the country's small size, domestic transport relies heavily on road networks connecting key hubs like Mbabane, Lobamba, and Manzini. Visa requirements should be verified with the nearest consulate, as regulations may change.

Accommodation Layout: City-Based

The hotel sector is concentrated in Mbabane, the executive capital, and Manzini, the commercial hub. Mbabane offers the highest density of business-oriented hotels, catering to government offices and multinational corporations. Lobamba, the legislative capital, has limited accommodation options, mostly consisting of small lodges. There are no major international resort clusters; travelers are advised to base themselves in cities for day trips.

Loyalty Landscape

Given the close economic ties with South Africa, the footprint of major international hotel chains is limited. Global loyalty programs such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG have minimal direct presence within Eswatini. Travelers are more likely to encounter independent boutique hotels or properties with loose affiliations to South African brands. It is advisable to utilize loyalty programs with strong networks in South Africa for cross-border travel benefits.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe food and water habits; local tourism advice says wash food well and cook thoroughly. Malaria risk is mainly in eastern areas bordering Mozambique/South Africa, so use bite prevention and ask a travel clinic about malaria medicine if going there. Avoid swimming in untreated freshwater because schistosomiasis occurs. Expect summer rain/thunderstorms, hot lowveld days, chilly winter nights, strong sun, and altitude-related temperature changes.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, plus COVID-19. Common travel considerations include hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, malaria prevention for risk areas, and rabies vaccine for higher animal-exposure or remote trips. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for Eswatini itself, but a certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months or older arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is workable but eSIM is not universal. Eswatini Mobile lists e-SIM self-service, self-registration, prepaid data bundles, and limited 5G in Manzini/Matsapha. MTN Eswatini is the other major carrier and lists SIM registration plus data and roaming bundles, but no clear official MTN tourist eSIM offer was found. Check device compatibility, ID registration rules, and coverage; regional travel eSIMs may work by roaming.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-07-07).
