Staying in Paraguay

Paraguay, a landlocked nation in central South America, offers a unique blend of Guarani heritage, colonial history, and modern economic dynamism. The capital, Asunción, serves as the primary hub for both business and leisure travel, featuring a hotel landscape dominated by urban properties rather than resort destinations. Home to the massive Itaipu Dam and significant Jesuit ruins, the country provides rich cultural experiences. As a founding member of Mercosur, Paraguay maintains political stability and boasts one of the fastest-growing economies in the Western Hemisphere. Travelers typically arrive via Asunción’s international airport and navigate the country primarily by road. For frequent flyers, Paraguay is an essential destination for exploring the interior of South America, with Asunción serving as the ideal base for regional excursions.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Paraguay is landlocked but has access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Paraná–Paraguay Waterway. The main international gateway is Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción. Domestic transportation relies heavily on road networks connecting the capital to the country's seventeen departments. As a founding member of Mercosur, visa requirements vary significantly by nationality, with some enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival access. Policies can change; therefore, travelers must verify current entry requirements with the relevant consulate before departure.

Where to Base: City-Centric Stays

The hotel landscape in Paraguay is distinctly city-centric rather than resort-oriented. Asunción, the capital and largest city, hosts the majority of mid-to-high-end business hotels and international brands, making it the ideal base for business travelers and those exploring the region. Other key cities like Ciudad del Este offer corresponding business accommodations. The country lacks traditional coastal or mountain resorts; instead, the accommodation experience focuses on urban convenience, business amenities, and integration with local culture.

Loyalty Landscape

Paraguay's international hotel market is well-covered by major global loyalty programs. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards have a significant footprint in key cities like Asunción, offering standard points earning and redemption options for frequent flyers. Given the prevalence of business-oriented properties, these international brands provide consistent service standards that appeal to regular travelers. Guests are advised to review the property distribution of these major programs in Paraguay's core urban centers to maximize their membership benefits.

Trip preparation

Health

Paraguay is generally low altitude, so altitude sickness is not a usual visitor issue. Heat, humidity and strong sun can be significant, especially in summer and the Chaco; hydrate and plan shade. Use safe food/water habits. Mosquito-borne risks include dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever and some malaria risk; prevent bites day and night.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 1 month before travel. Be current on routine vaccines, COVID-19 and MMR. CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid for many travelers; consider rabies for animal/outdoor exposure. Yellow fever vaccine is recommended for travelers 9+ months except trips limited to Asunción, and proof is required for travelers 1+ arriving from Bolivia, Brazil, Peru or Venezuela, including >24h transits; not required for direct U.S. travel.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is usable mainly through international travel eSIM providers roaming on Paraguayan networks; do not assume a local prepaid eSIM is available. Main local carriers are Tigo, Personal, Claro and Vox, with prepaid physical SIM/data packs common in cities and shops. Bring an unlocked phone and check registration/ID rules and rural coverage before relying on mobile data.
