Staying in French Polynesia

French Polynesia (ISO: PF) is an overseas collectivity of France located in the South Pacific Ocean, comprising 121 geographically dispersed islands and atolls spanning over 2,000 kilometers. With a total land area of 3,521 square kilometers and a population of approximately 282,596, it stands as France's sole overseas country. The majority of the population resides in the Society Islands, particularly on Tahiti, where the capital, Papeete, is located. Divided into five main groups—the Society Islands (Windward and Leeward), Tuamotus, Gambier, Marquesas, and Austral Islands—this destination is renowned for its luxury resort culture, pristine lagoons, and rich Polynesian heritage. Travel here is predominantly resort-based, offering an exclusive escape in one of the world's most remote and beautiful regions.

Entry & getting around

Travel Model & Regional Structure

Accommodation in French Polynesia is heavily resort-oriented rather than city-based, reflecting its geography of dispersed islands. The archipelago is divided into five distinct groups: the Society Islands (including Tahiti and Bora Bora), Tuamotus, Gambier, Marquesas, and Austral Islands. Most travelers base themselves in the Society Islands due to the highest concentration of luxury resorts and infrastructure. Inter-island travel requires domestic flights or ferries, making the choice of 'home base' critical for itinerary planning.

Gateways & Domestic Transport

The primary international gateway is Faa'a International Airport (PPT) on Tahiti, offering direct flights from major hubs like Paris, Los Angeles, and Auckland. Domestic connectivity is managed largely by Air Tahiti, which operates a dense network of flights between the various island groups. For the Tuamotu archipelago and other remote atolls, ferry services complement air travel. Given the vast distances and scattered nature of the islands, efficient domestic transit planning is essential for multi-island itineraries.

Entry & Visa Requirements

As an overseas collectivity of France, French Polynesia has specific entry requirements separate from mainland France. Travelers should verify visa regulations well in advance. Generally, citizens of countries requiring visas for France may need specific authorization for French Polynesia. Always check with the nearest French consulate or official government sources for the most current entry requirements, as policies can change and vary by nationality.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

The hotel loyalty landscape in French Polynesia is unique due to the prevalence of independent luxury resorts and small-scale properties. Major global chains like Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt have a limited footprint compared to other destinations. Many iconic resorts operate independently or under boutique luxury brands, meaning standard point redemption options are scarce. Frequent travelers should prioritize direct bookings with resorts or look for specific partnerships, as traditional loyalty program benefits may be less applicable here.

Trip preparation

Health

Tropical-island prep: use sun/heat precautions, hydrate, and prevent mosquito bites (CDC lists dengue and Zika risks; no malaria notice for French Polynesia). Use safe food/water practices; in remote areas or after storms choose bottled/treated water. Avoid floodwater/freshwater exposure after heavy rain because leptospirosis is a risk. Reef-fish poisoning (ciguatera) can occur in the Pacific; follow local advice on high-risk fish. Altitude illness is not a usual visitor concern, though mountain hikes can be hot, steep, and remote.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 1 month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, flu, varicella/shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers and hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers of all ages; typhoid is recommended for most travelers, especially rural/smaller-city stays. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is case-by-case for animal/remote exposure risk. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for French Polynesia, but a certificate is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country; not required for direct travel from the US.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is supported but check device compatibility and island coverage before relying on it. Vini sells prepaid 4G/5G eSIM options, including travel cards and data-focused prepaid plans, with QR-code activation; it also publishes a coverage map. Other local mobile brands include Vodafone Polynésie and Ora/Viti, but tourist eSIM availability should be verified directly before arrival. Expect strongest service on Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and main settlements; outer islands can be patchier.
