Staying in Mongolia

Mongolia presents a unique challenge and opportunity for frequent-flyer hotel travelers. As the world's most sparsely populated sovereign state, the hospitality infrastructure is heavily centralized. Approximately half of the country's 3.5 million residents live in Ulaanbaatar, the capital, which serves as the primary hub for international chain hotels and business travel. Outside the capital, accommodation options are scarce and often consist of traditional ger camps or small local guesthouses, particularly in the vast steppe and Gobi Desert regions. Travel logistics require careful planning. Domestic connectivity relies on air travel between key cities, while ground transport can be time-consuming due to the immense size of the country (the 18th largest globally). For loyalty program members, the landscape is dominated by global chains present in Ulaanbaatar, with limited presence in remote areas. Travelers should base themselves in the capital for maximum convenience and amenities, venturing out for specific cultural or natural experiences with pre-booked arrangements. The country's history, from the Mongol Empire to its current democratic market economy, adds a rich layer to the travel experience, though modern comforts remain concentrated in urban centers.

Entry & getting around

Base in Ulaanbaatar

Given Mongolia's extreme population density disparity, Ulaanbaatar offers the highest concentration of hotels and international brand coverage. For frequent flyers seeking comfort and points accumulation, it is advisable to base your stay in the capital. Accommodations in other regions are primarily traditional ger camps with basic facilities, which may not suit travelers requiring standardized services.

Transport & Entry

Mongolia is a landlocked country with no coastline. The main international gateway is the airport in Ulaanbaatar. Domestic travel relies heavily on air connections between provinces, as overland transport can be time-consuming due to the vast territory. Visa requirements vary by nationality; always check with the relevant consulate before travel. Allow ample time for transit when planning itineraries across this large landmass.

Loyalty Landscape

Major global hotel loyalty programs have a significant footprint in central Ulaanbaatar but very limited presence in remote areas. Travelers should prioritize brands participating in global alliances to ensure points earning and benefits. Given the economic structure focused on mining and services, the luxury hotel market is concentrated. Verify in advance that your chosen hotel supports your target loyalty program's member benefits.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe food and water practices, especially outside Ulaanbaatar; carry water treatment for camping/treks. Mongolia has strong sun, big heat/cold swings, winter air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, and high-elevation travel, so pace exertion and hydrate. Prevent tick/mosquito/flea bites; avoid unknown animals, rodents and marmots. Rural care can be limited; consider travel/evacuation insurance.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines such as MMR, polio, tetanus/pertussis, flu, varicella and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and B for unvaccinated travelers, typhoid for most travelers, and considering rabies and tick-borne encephalitis based on rural/outdoor exposure and access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is usable but plan coverage carefully: Apple lists Mobicom and Unitel as supporting eSIM activation methods, and Mobicom as offering prepaid eSIM plans for international travelers. Unitel also markets a tourist SIM option. Major local networks include Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel, G-Mobile and ONDO; 4G/5G is best in Ulaanbaatar and aimag centers, with gaps across steppe, Gobi and mountain routes.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-24).
