Staying in Latvia

Latvia, one of the three Baltic states, offers a compelling blend of rich history, modern infrastructure, and natural beauty. Its capital, Riga, is renowned for its well-preserved Art Nouveau architecture and vibrant cultural scene, making it a prime hub for business and leisure travelers. The country features a temperate seasonal climate, with distinct changes across the year, suitable for travel in all seasons. As a member of the European Union, Eurozone, and NATO, Latvia boasts efficient transport networks and high standards of service. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, Latvia provides a unique intersection of Nordic efficiency and Eastern European charm, with strong urban bases in Riga and opportunities for regional exploration.

Entry & getting around

Hotel Landscape & Regional Structure

The hotel landscape in Latvia is heavily city-centric, with Riga serving as the undisputed primary hub. The capital hosts the vast majority of international brand properties, business hotels, and upscale accommodations, making it the strategic base for most travelers. Outside of Riga, lodging options are sparse, concentrated mainly in secondary cities like Jelgava or coastal resort areas such as Jūrmala. Unlike resort-heavy destinations, Latvia is best navigated by basing oneself in Riga and taking short trips for business or cultural exploration, rather than relying on a dispersed network of holiday resorts.

Gateways & Transport

Riga International Airport (RIX) is the sole international gateway and the primary point of entry for travelers. It offers frequent connections to major European hubs, making it a critical node for frequent flyers. Domestic transport is well-developed, with efficient rail and road networks connecting Riga to other parts of the country. For business travelers, hotels in Riga are densely clustered in the city center and near the airport, facilitating quick access to meeting venues and transit links.

Entry & Visa Requirements

As a member of the Schengen Area, Latvia adheres to the unified Schengen visa policy. Travelers with valid Schengen visas can enter freely. Citizens of visa-exempt countries must ensure their passports meet validity requirements. Since Latvia uses the Euro, payments are convenient. Travelers are strongly advised to consult the official guidelines of the Latvian consulate in their home country before planning their trip to verify current visa exemptions, stay durations, and entry requirements, as policies may change.

Loyalty Program Landscape

Latvia has a strong presence of international hotel chains, with major global loyalty programs well-represented. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards operate multiple properties in Riga, covering the spectrum from luxury to select-service. Accor ALL and World of Hyatt also offer consistent accommodation options through their brand portfolios. For frequent travelers, these mainstream programs provide extensive opportunities for earning and redeeming points, ensuring a reliable and convenient stay experience across the country.

Trip preparation

Health

Latvia is low-altitude and generally low risk for tropical disease. Use normal food/water hygiene; take extra care with untreated lake/river water when hiking or camping. Ticks are a practical concern in forests, meadows and parks, with tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme risk; check skin after outdoor time. Mosquitoes are seasonal but malaria/yellow fever are not a Latvia risk. Pack for cold winters, changeable rain and occasional summer heat/UV.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, varicella, flu and COVID-19. CDC lists hepatitis A and hepatitis B as recommended for unvaccinated travelers to Latvia. Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine is recommended/considered for travelers with extensive outdoor tick exposure. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for higher animal-contact or remote travelers. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is good in cities and along main routes, with 4G/5G from Latvia's main mobile networks: LMT, Tele2 and Bite. eSIM is supported by LMT, including LMT Karte prepaid options and new-number activation by QR code; confirm phone compatibility, ID rules and whether a visitor can buy/activate online or must visit a customer centre. International travel eSIMs also commonly cover Latvia, but local-carrier coverage may be better outside Riga.
