Staying in Luxembourg

Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a landlocked country in Western Europe and one of the four institutional seats of the European Union. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, it serves as a compact, high-efficiency destination blending historic charm with modern business infrastructure. The capital, Luxembourg City, features a UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town and extensive fortifications, offering a unique urban experience despite the country's small size (Europe's seventh-smallest). Accommodation is predominantly city-based, catering to the significant expatriate population and EU institution staff, rather than resort-style leisure travel. The country boasts excellent connectivity via rail and road to neighboring Belgium, Germany, and France, making it an ideal hub for multi-country itineraries. With a multilingual environment (Luxembourgish, French, and German) and a high standard of living, travelers can expect seamless service and safety. While it lacks large-scale resort destinations, its strategic location and dense concentration of international hotels make it a preferred stop for business and short-stay leisure travelers.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Luxembourg is part of the Schengen Area; valid Schengen visas or visa-free entry documents apply. Always check with the consulate for the latest regulations. Domestic transport is efficient, with frequent trains and buses connecting Luxembourg City to other towns. Notably, public transport is free nationwide, facilitating easy exploration of the region.

Where to Base

Given the small size and urban focus, Luxembourg City is the recommended base. As the political, cultural, and commercial hub, it offers a wide range of accommodations from international chains to boutique hotels. While areas like Echternach offer unique stays, remaining in the capital maximizes convenience and transport efficiency for most travelers.

Loyalty Landscape

The hotel market is dominated by global major chains such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Accor. These brands have a strong footprint in Luxembourg City, covering luxury to upper-midscale business segments. Due to the high internationalization of the local population, these mainstream loyalty programs have robust coverage and recognition, making them ideal for frequent flyers to earn points and benefits.

Trip preparation

Health

Luxembourg is a low-altitude, high-income European destination; altitude illness is not a normal concern. Use normal safe-food habits, drink treated water, and avoid swallowing untreated lake/river water when swimming or hiking. For forests and parks, prevent mosquito and tick bites and check for ticks after outdoor time. Summer heat/UV and winter cold can matter during long walks or festivals.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella, Tdap/Td and shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is considered for many travelers; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is only for higher-risk activities or access concerns. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for Luxembourg.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is practical for many visitors with compatible phones. Main local mobile networks include POST Luxembourg, Orange Luxembourg and Tango; confirm whether the specific prepaid or visitor plan supports eSIM before relying on it. Luxembourg is also commonly covered by Europe travel eSIMs such as Orange Travel, and EU roaming may work for EU SIM users.
