Staying in France

France works well as a country-level hotel trip because its travel map is highly regional rather than centered only on Paris. The official tourism board’s destination list spans Paris, the Alps and Mont Blanc, Alsace and Lorraine, Bordeaux, Brittany, Burgundy, Champagne, Corsica, the Côte d’Azur, the Loire Valley, Normandy, Occitanie and Provence, while its top-city list points hotel travelers toward bases such as Paris, Nice, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Toulouse, Lille, Nantes and Montpellier. For entry, France-Visas describes short-stay Schengen visas as covering tourism, business and family visits, with stays not exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period; visa waivers depend on nationality, Schengen/EU permits or specific status. International arrivals commonly use the Paris airport system, with Nice Côte d’Azur and Lyon Saint-Exupéry useful regional gateways. Within France, SNCF Connect lists TGV INOUI and OUIGO among train companies serving France, with high-speed TGV INOUI service and direct routes between major cities. In hotel loyalty, ALL Accor is the first program to check because Accor’s own site presents a broad brand ladder from luxury to economy and highlights Paris among its popular destinations; Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors also publish France hotel pages across major city and resort markets.

Entry & getting around

Where to Base

Paris is the natural first base and air gateway, but France rewards a multi-base hotel plan: Nice and the Côte d’Azur for the coast, Marseille and Provence for the Mediterranean south, Lyon for food and business travel, Bordeaux for wine country, and Strasbourg or Toulouse for regional city stays.

Entry & Getting Around

France-Visas describes the short-stay Schengen framework for tourism and business visits, with stays not exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period and visa waivers depending on nationality or qualifying permits. For domestic travel, SNCF Connect lists TGV INOUI and OUIGO as train options serving France, making rail a practical backbone between major cities.

Main Gateways

For air arrivals, Paris remains the key gateway, while Nice Côte d’Azur is useful for Riviera itineraries and publishes direct destinations across France, Europe, North America, the Middle East and North Africa. Lyon Saint-Exupéry is a strong regional gateway, with airport, city-center and Alpine connections highlighted by the airport.

Loyalty Landscape

ALL Accor is usually the first loyalty program to check in France because Accor’s own site presents brands across luxury, premium, midscale and economy segments and highlights Paris among popular hotel destinations. Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors also publish France hotel pages, so they are worth checking in larger cities and resort areas.

Trip preparation

Health

France has high food and water standards; tap water is generally safe, but use normal food hygiene and treat water when hiking or camping. Mosquito, sand-fly and tick bites can occur, especially outdoors/wooded or warmer southern areas; use repellent and check for ticks. Plan for summer heatwaves/UV, Alpine/Pyrenees altitude or cold, and swim only in designated areas. This is reference information, not medical advice.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, flu, polio, varicella, Tdap and shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is considered for most travelers, especially rural areas or street food; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers. Rabies or tick-borne encephalitis vaccination may be discussed for higher-risk outdoor/animal exposure. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for entry to France.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely supported in France on compatible unlocked phones. Major local networks include Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile; all have eSIM support for eligible plans/devices. Travelers can use Orange Travel eSIMs, Bouygues Telecom vacation prepaid options, or other carrier/MVNO travel eSIMs. Check coverage for rural, mountain and island areas before buying.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
