Staying in Botswana

Botswana, a landlocked nation in Southern Africa, is renowned for its vast Kalahari Desert landscapes and exceptional wildlife destinations. The accommodation sector is distinctly divided between urban centers and remote wilderness areas. Gaborone, the capital, offers modern city hotels catering to business and transit travelers, while regions like the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park feature high-end eco-lodges and luxury tented camps designed for immersive safari experiences. Due to the country's sparse population and large geographic area, travel typically involves basing oneself in specific hubs for day trips or multi-day excursions. Botswana boasts political stability and is considered one of the safest countries in Africa. For frequent flyers, the market offers a range from premium wilderness retreats to standard urban properties, though advance planning is essential due to limited infrastructure in remote zones.

Entry & getting around

Regional Structure & Accommodation Models

Botswana's lodging landscape is bifurcated into urban business hubs and remote ecological sanctuaries. Gaborone and Francistown host international chains and boutique hotels suitable for business or transit. Conversely, primary tourism draws are located in the north and west, including the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and Makgadikgadi Pans. These areas are dominated by high-end lodges and tented camps that prioritize privacy and nature immersion, rather than traditional city-centric hotel clusters.

Gateways & Domestic Transport

Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Gaborone serves as the primary international gateway, with connections to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and select European cities. Domestic connectivity relies heavily on air and road networks. Given the dispersed nature of attractions, many travelers utilize charter flights or small aircraft to hop between major camps. While road infrastructure has improved, long-distance driving requires ample time and 4x4 vehicles. Urban and short-distance travel can be managed via taxis or rental cars.

Entry & Visa Guidelines

Botswana offers visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry to citizens of many countries, depending on nationality. Travelers should verify current visa requirements and validity periods by checking the official website of the Botswana consulate or embassy prior to departure. Passports must be valid for at least six months upon entry. Given public health protocols, check if vaccinations such as yellow fever are required based on your country of origin.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

In Botswana, major global hotel groups (such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG) maintain a significant footprint in urban centers like Gaborone, allowing frequent flyers to leverage points and elite benefits for standardized services. However, the premier eco-tourism sector is dominated by independently operated high-end camps and small boutique properties, which typically do not participate in mainstream global loyalty programs. Consequently, travelers can maximize point accumulation during urban stays, while wilderness exploration often relies on direct booking perks or local partnerships.

Trip preparation

Health

Botswana is hot and semi-arid, with very high summer temperatures and a rainy season mainly Nov-Mar; plan hydration, sun protection and heat breaks. CDC notes malaria risk in several northern/central districts including Chobe, Ngamiland/Okavango and Francistown, but not Gaborone. Use bite precautions, avoid untreated freshwater, and follow safe food/water habits.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be current on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, flu, varicella and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and B for unvaccinated travelers, typhoid for most travelers, and rabies pre-exposure discussion for animal/outdoor risk or limited access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Botswana itself and is not required from the U.S.; proof is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is strongest in major towns and along parts of national highways; remote safari areas can be patchy. Botswana Tourism lists Mascom, Orange and beMobile/BTC as mobile providers, with SIM cards widely sold in supermarkets and service stations. Orange Botswana offers local eSIM activation for compatible phones online or in stores; Mascom sells prepaid mobile data bundles, while local eSIM availability beyond Orange should be checked before arrival.
