Staying in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated on the Balkan Peninsula, offers a compelling blend of history, culture, and diverse geography. The capital, Sarajevo, showcases a unique fusion of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian heritage, while the southern region of Herzegovina enjoys a Mediterranean climate. The country is predominantly city-based for travelers, with Sarajevo serving as the primary hub. The terrain is largely mountainous, dominated by the Dinaric Alps, making it ideal for those interested in history, urban exploration, and nature. With a population of around 3.4 million, comprising Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats, the nation presents a rich tapestry of cultural influences shaped by its complex past, from the medieval Kingdom of Bosnia to the Ottoman era and beyond.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

International travelers typically arrive via Sarajevo International Airport, the primary gateway. Domestic transport relies heavily on road networks connecting key cities such as Mostar and Banja Luka. Visa requirements vary by nationality; always check with the local consulate for the latest entry regulations before traveling.

Accommodation Layout: City-Centric

The hotel industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina is highly concentrated in major city centers rather than large resort complexes. Sarajevo is the preferred base for both business and leisure travelers, offering a range of options from international chains to boutique hotels. Mostar in the south serves as another key hub for exploring the historic old town and natural attractions. Despite a short coastline, the country lacks traditional seaside resort destinations.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups have a significant presence, particularly in large cities like Sarajevo. Brands such as Marriott, Hilton, and InterContinental typically dominate the upper-tier market. Local brands and international economy chains are also expanding. For frequent flyers, choosing international chain hotels allows for better point accumulation and access to member benefits.

Trip preparation

Health

Use normal food-and-water caution: standards can vary by place and activity, and hikers/campers should treat backcountry water. CDC notes tick/sand-fly and other bug-bite risks; use repellent and check for ticks after outdoor time. Summers can be hot, while mountains bring strong sun, cold snaps and fast-changing weather; plan hydration, sunscreen, layers and basic first aid.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC lists routine vaccines as the baseline, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella and Tdap/Td, plus staying current on COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers; Hepatitis B is recommended for many unvaccinated travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal, cave, outdoor or remote-area risk. Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine is for extensive or possible tick exposure in endemic areas. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is usable in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in cities and main tourist corridors, but check phone compatibility and registration rules. Local networks include BH Telecom, m:tel and HT Eronet. BH Telecom advertises tourist eSIM packages with data and regional roaming; other local eSIM availability can depend on plan, shop and eligibility. International travel eSIMs also commonly cover the country. Expect weaker service in mountains and rural valleys.
