Staying in Andorra

The Principality of Andorra is a microstate nestled in the eastern Pyrenees on the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by France to the north and Spain to the south. Officially created by Charlemagne and later formalized in 1278, it is a unique co-principality headed by the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell. With a population of approximately 89,058 and an area of just 468 square kilometers, it is one of Europe's smallest nations. Its capital, Andorra la Vella, stands as the highest capital in Europe at 1,023 meters above sea level. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, Andorra presents a distinct profile. It is not a typical destination for large-scale international hotel chains, nor is it a member of the European Union, though it uses the Euro. Tourism drives the economy, attracting around 8 million visitors annually, primarily for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. The country lacks its own international airport; travelers must fly into nearby hubs in Barcelona, Toulouse, or Madrid and drive in. Consequently, the hotel landscape is dominated by local properties and smaller boutique hotels rather than global luxury brands. While Spanish, Portuguese, and French are widely spoken, Catalan remains the official language. Travelers should plan their stays around the main valleys and towns, utilizing the efficient road network to navigate this compact, mountainous terrain.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Andorra has no airport or railway station. International travelers must arrive via neighboring France (e.g., Toulouse) or Spain (e.g., Barcelona, Girona) and enter by road. As a non-EU member, border controls can be strict; verify visa requirements with the relevant consulate. Domestic transport relies heavily on private vehicles due to excellent road networks connecting the main valleys, while public transit options are limited.

Where to Base

Accommodation is concentrated in key valleys and towns rather than scattered resorts. Andorra la Vella offers the widest range of hotels, ideal for shopping and winter sports. Other strategic bases include Escaldes-Engordany and Arinsal. Due to the country's small size, most ski areas and hiking trails are within a 30-minute drive from any major town.

Loyalty Landscape

The footprint of major international hotel chains in Andorra is minimal. Global loyalty programs like Marriott, Hilton, and IHG have very few, if any, direct properties in the country. The market is dominated by local boutique hotels, family-run establishments, and some regional chains. Frequent travelers should focus on direct booking benefits or general credit card travel points rather than relying on specific hotel group redemptions.

Trip preparation

Health

Andorra is a high-Pyrenees, industrialized destination. Use normal food-and-water caution; treat stream or untreated water when hiking. Outdoor risks are mainly altitude, strong UV/snow reflection, fast-changing mountain weather, winter cold, summer heat, and tick/mosquito bites in wooded areas. Carry insurance and a small health kit.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, varicella, Tdap/Td, flu, polio, shingles when applicable, and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers to Andorra. Rabies is uncommon in dogs, but pre-exposure vaccine may be discussed for animal/bat exposure or remote outdoor plans. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no certificate is required.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is well supported for visitors with compatible phones. Andorra Telecom is the domestic mobile operator and promotes eSIM Andorra for tourist connectivity; visitors can buy online, receive a QR code by email, and activate before arrival or in Andorra. Physical SIMs are available at authorized points for phones without eSIM. Free Wi-Fi hotspots are also available in ski resorts, main-town streets, public places, shopping centres, and The Shopping Mile.
