Note the name issue: IST is now Istanbul Airport, not the old Ataturk Airport, whose scheduled passenger flights moved to the new airport in 2019. IST is Turkish Airlines’ main hub and a major Star Alliance connecting point, with both long-haul intercontinental traffic and dense regional links across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, the Caucasus and Central Asia. The airport is currently centered on one very large passenger terminal: domestic flights are mainly grouped around the G pier, while international flights use the larger A/B/D/F areas, with C/E functioning as connector zones. That makes transfers simpler than a multi-terminal airport, but walking distances can be substantial, so tight self-connections are a poor idea. For the city, the M11 metro to Gayrettepe is the most predictable route for Levent/Şişli connections; allow roughly 30 minutes to Gayrettepe and about 60–90 minutes total to many central areas after onward metro/taxi. Havaist coaches are often simpler for Taksim or Sultanahmet, but traffic can stretch the trip. For long layovers, IST has airside and landside YOTELAIR options, sleep pods/rest areas, strong dining, and Turkish Airlines’ Touristanbul/stopover programs for eligible itineraries, subject to visa and timing rules.
