Palonegro International Airport (BGA) is Bucaramanga’s airport for Santander, built on high ground west of the city. Treat it as a regional gateway rather than a major connecting hub: most flying is domestic, with trunk links such as Bogota and Medellin plus thinner regional routes, and limited international service led by Panama City connections. It is not an alliance hub, although Star Alliance flyers may encounter Avianca and Copa service; other operators can include Colombian regional and low-cost carriers depending on the season. The passenger setup is simple: one terminal with separate domestic and international processing areas, so transfers are on foot inside the same building, but international arrivals should expect immigration/customs and possible baggage re-check. For the city, the practical choice is an official taxi or app ride to central Bucaramanga, normally about 25-40 minutes via the road through Giron, longer in traffic or bad weather. BGA is compact and manageable, but not built for long airside layovers: plan conservatively if self-connecting and use the city, Giron, or a hotel in Bucaramanga for longer waits.
