Entry & visa

China → Hong Kong

Visa required

For a non-transit social or business visit, PRC passport holders should obtain a Hong Kong entry permit in advance.

Hong Kong Immigration separately states that PRC passport holders transiting through Hong Kong to or from another country or territory may be granted 7 days on each landing if normal immigration requirements are met, including valid entry facilities for the destination and confirmed onward booking; this is not a visa-free rule for a standalone Hong Kong visit.

U.S. and Canadian ABTCs generally provide fast-track benefits, not visa-free privileges; Mainland Chinese and Taiwan residents remain subject to Hong Kong’s special entry arrangements.

Common questions

Can a PRC passport holder with a valid U.S. visa visit Hong Kong visa-free for tourism or meetings?

No. A U.S. visa is not a standalone Hong Kong visa waiver. Hong Kong Immigration says PRC passport holders should apply for an entry permit for social and business visits. The 7-day allowance applies only when transiting through Hong Kong to or from another country or territory, with valid destination entry facilities and confirmed onward booking.

Can a Mainland Chinese resident use an APEC Business Travel Card to enter Hong Kong visa-free?

Do not treat this as a normal ABTC visa waiver. Hong Kong has special arrangements for Mainland residents: tourist, business and similar visits generally require an Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao with the relevant endorsement; a PRC passport is usable for the 7-day allowance only when the transit conditions are met.

Can a Taiwan resident enter Hong Kong with only a Taiwan passport?

Generally not as a bare-passport visa-free entry. Eligible Taiwan residents should complete Hong Kong pre-arrival registration first; a successful registration is valid for two months and two entries, with up to 30 days per visitor landing. Taiwan residents holding a valid Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents may also visit for up to 30 days.

Does a U.S. ordinary passport holder need a visa for a short tourist or business visit to Hong Kong?

No. The Hong Kong Immigration table gives U.S. ordinary passport holders up to 90 days visa-free for visits; U.S. diplomatic passports are excluded from that visa-free line.
