- Description
- Lao Siam stands out from the crowd of Asian eateries in Belleville. Founded in 1985 by the current owner's parents, who were originally from Thailand and Laos, this neighbourhood restaurant is an institution that celebrates the cuisines of these two countries. Everything is made on site by the three Souksavanh brothers for fine, flavoursome food that is full of flavour: crying tiger and its spicy sauce, thadeua nem (Lao crispy rice salad), tom kha soup, red ruby dessert with coconut milk. If the place is full, head to the adjoining Ama Siam, which has a short menu of specials.

- Review summary
- Located in Le Pré-Saint-Gervais, Lao Siam offers authentic Thai and Laotian cuisine. Many reviewers praise the homemade dishes, balanced sauces, and friendly, smiling service, noting that some French restaurants could learn from their hospitality. However, experiences vary significantly. Some guests report slow service, noisy atmospheres, or feeling rushed to leave. Others criticize the food as tasteless or overly reliant on glutamate. While loyal patrons appreciate the consistent quality over decades, others find the service inconsistent and the environment cramped. It is a restaurant with distinct character but variable execution.
- Best for
- Suitable for diners seeking authentic flavors who can tolerate inconsistent service.
