Sushi Inaba

Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Chef Yasuhiro Hirano turns out some of the most exciting sushi in town at a counter in a private room tucked within sister restaurant, I-naba. His particular magic lies in weaving together a few key components, including exotic fish that he ages before blending with a host of ingredients. He’s mastered dishes that more established pros haven't—and to such precise and polished effect. With just a handful of seats at the counter and one seating nightly, reservations are a must (and go quickly). Chef Hirano enjoys sharing his craft, but you may opt for silence to savor such delicacies as soba with

Sweet Rice

Thai

Tucked into a back corner of Pacific Square Shopping Center, this exciting haven specializes in authentic Thai breakfasts and desserts. The playful menu also proffers hearty soups and noodle dishes, so it's hard to go wrong, but first-timers might want to start with jok—congee bubbling with tender pork meatballs, loads of fresh ginger and an egg that cooks gently n the molten rice. Desserts—even post-breakfast—are an absolute delight; and if the mango sticky rice is available, jump on it.The space is casual, with counter service, a welcoming vibe, and friendly servers. Sushi Sonagi

Japanese, Sushi

$$$$

Don't expect to drop by Sushi Sonagi when the mood strikes, as this eight-seat sushi counter is only open on the weekends and hosts just two seatings nightly. Those who have planned ahead will be rewarded with an enticing multicourse omakase prepared by Chef Daniel Son, a second-generation sushi chef. Chawanmushi, an ankimo tart and minimally dressed nigiri are all part of the experience, though it's the dolsot sekogani, or female snow crab stone pot rice, that makes a big impression. Presented to guests in the pot, then heated to produce a crispy crust, it's then portioned to eager diners who

Vin Folk

Californian, Contemporary · Bib

$$$

Vin Folk is the kind of place you want to come again and again. The staff is friendly and welcoming; the ambience is just right—both indoors and out—and the offerings are widely appealing. Chefs Kevin De Los Santos and Katya Shastova bring a breath of fresh air to Hermosa Beach with their menu of shareable, globally minded dishes. Whether it's the mussels tart, a riff on a pot pie with flaky pastry and seafood in a warm fennel cream or the chili crab prepared with a warm risotto, there's something delicious to be had. End with goat cheese fromage blanc with pear and orange blossom honey granit

Coni'Seafood

Mexican

This local treasure has been earning accolades since it first opened in 1987. It continues to flourish as a family affair, as the founder’s daughter now runs the show. The front dining room is welcoming, but the enclosed back patio is really the place to be. It's the perfect setting for relishing the kitchen’s Nayarit-style cooking that showcases shrimp and fish imported from Sinaloa. Shrimp appear again and again, perhaps breaded and fried in tacos, or sautéed head-on in a bright red sauce of roasted chilies and beer. Enjoy their fish fried, cooked whole or even inside heaping bowls of cevich

RYLA

$$$

Ryla, from husband-and-wife chefs Ray Hayashi and Cynthia Hetlinger, remains one of Hermosa Beach’s splashier dining destinations, pairing a lively coastal atmosphere with contemporary cooking rooted in Japanese technique and broader Asian influences. The menu encourages sharing across a wide range of small plates, sushi, noodles and larger mains. Dishes like Japanese yellowtail hiramasa sashimi with mizuna, nori crema and ponzu, or blistered green beans with crispy tofu and black bean sauce showcase the kitchen’s bold flavors and layered textures. Larger plates range from “3 Cup” wild black c

Manhattan Beach Post

International

Just a stone's throw from Manhattan Beach Pier, this restaurant is big and buzzing. It's almost always packed, especially with plenty of young families, and they're all here for a taste of Chef/co-owner David LeFevre’s globally minded creations with a clear California point of view. Head-on Caledonian blue prawns ajillo atop diced potatoes with saffron mayonnaise. Beeler's Farm pork porterhouse is grilled and accompanied by Asian pear kimchi and a black mustard sauce. Everything revolves around gathering, conversing and sharing, and portions lean small, so plan your ordering as a group to expl

Fishing with Dynamite

Seafood

$$$

This tight and warm seafood spot is located just down the block from the ocean. Inside, it has a decidedly beachy vibe, flooded with sunlight and colors that make it feel cozy even when it's loud and busy. Raw bar dishes comprise half the menu, and if the list of first-class oysters, clams, and lobsters seems overwhelming, the friendly staff will help make sense of it all. Dishes such as wild New Caledonian prawns with garlic butter and fragrant lemon jasmine rice or seared diver scallops with Japanese curry sweet potato coulis are indicative of the delicious, decidedly uncomplicated cooking a
