Masala y Maíz

Fusion · ★ Michelin

Always buzzing, Masala y Maiz draws curious diners eager for a taste of this highly original cuisine. Chefs Norma Listman and Saqib Keval cook with a seamless style, effortlessly blending African, Indian, and Mexican cuisines. This is food that leaves a lasting impression, as in samosas tucked with suadero or potato with pepitas and topped with vibrant sauces. Superb prawns from Veracruz are grilled aggressively and come with melting butter infused with vanilla, while chilpachole, a red-hued seafood stew from Veracruz, is revamped with a tamal colado and softshell crab. The meal concludes on a

Taqueria Los Cocuyos

Mexican · Bib

This taqueria in Centro Historico has been a mainstay since 1980. Standing by a cauldron of meats bubbling away, a chef at the front wields a cleaver with lightning speed. An expansive dining room speaks to just how busy this place gets. Offerings are numerous but recent highlights include tender, melting cabeza as well as the classic al pastor, both finished tableside with salsas and a squeeze of lime. Swing for the suadero later in the evening when the meats have had plenty of time to braise.

While the bones of its industrial past are present, this chic Roma Norte restaurant's gorgeous space boasts whitewashed brick, mesquite wood furnishings and soaring ceilings. It's breezy and beautiful—and you'll want to linger for hours. Chef Eduardo Garcia's French and globally influenced Mexican cuisine draws attention. Order à la carte or try their tasting menu; either way you will be delighted by the intentional cooking here. Aguachile is given a glow-up, featuring sweet sea scallops and a bright dragon fruit sauce spiced with green chile. Seared fish is gorgeously seared and plated with a

Rosetta

Creative, Mexican · ★ Michelin

Chef Elena Reygadas's Rosetta is a perennial favorite, packed with a crowd that comes here for creative cooking that is decidedly Mexican but is inflected with global influences. Dishes are designed for sharing, ideal for those who want to sample more of her ingenious creations like the cabbage tacos with two small rounds of Savoy cabbage, served warm with pistachio puree and romeritos. Blending interesting flavors and textures, this dish is a great play on expectations, and its different shades of green are visually arresting. A pre-dinner cocktail at the moody 686 Bar upstairs is a smart way to start an evening in the capable hands of Chef Lucho Martinez. Named for his daughter Emilia, the intimate restaurant on the ground floor suits couples well, while the handsome kitchen takes a contemporary look at Mexican ingredients, many of which are seafood. Think grilled young corn served in a sauce made of coffee, browned butter and yuzu or a tostada bearing Veracruz-style fish stew topped with shaved avocado and caviar. The signature dessert celebrates all things mamey, arriving as a Swiss roll and frozen tartlet. Refin

Expendio de Maíz

Mexican · ★ Michelin

With only four communal tables, no sign, and no menu, this cash-only, sidewalk operation in Roma Norte offers a surprising experience that prioritizes food over fuss. In place of typical creature comforts, find a bustling kitchen that cooks and cooks until diners tap out. It is anyone’s guess as to what’s coming but know that heirloom corn nixtamalized and ground in house serves as the foundation for many of the dishes. Tortillas, sopes, and huaraches alike are molded and griddled to order and then dressed in a dazzling variety of seasonal ingredients and sauces. Tableside salsas pack lightnin

Taco Tasting Room

Mexican

$$$$

Taco Tasting Room isn't just the name of this energetic spot; it's a hint at what's offered inside. Pull up a seat at the counter and settle in for a journey across Mexico with a dozen courses. It's a veritable feast, though a manageable one with just a few bites per course. It's all highly creative and offers a good value. Diners may expect items such as a crisp tostada layered with kampachi, sea urchin and tangerine; an enchilada with nutty, creamy mole and torched sunflower hearts; a suckling pig carnitas taco; and corn esquites with charbroiled ribeye and grasshopper mayonnaise, among othe

Tacos de Canasta Los Especiales

Mexican

A line forms in the street for this taco spot just half a block off the Zócalo. Bring cash, then order at the small entrance where you'll be given tokens to give to the taquero to indicate how many tacos you've ordered. While the menu is limited (you'll choose from potato, beans, carne en adobo, and chicharrón with salsa verde), these are some of the least expensive tacos you can find, so go ahead and order with abandon. The line moves quickly and once you're inside, the dining room is deceptively large. Sit or stand, but don't skip the salsas, pickles, sliced cabbage, and guacamole to top off
