Dear Jane's

American, Seafood

$$$$

In case this Marina del Rey restaurant's glass wall with views of the boats outside didn't give it away, Dear Jane's celebrates the life aquatic with its focus on old school seafood and Continental cuisine. This spot pours it on with large portions and over-the-top flourishes (caviar makes a regular appearance) while keeping things grounded with strong cooking. Shrimp Louie, done tableside, is sized to share, as is the wedge, which brilliantly subs in vinaigrette in place of creamy dressing. Blackened salmon with a rich parsley and caper sauce is perfectly cooked, and lemony potatoes are a nic

Charcoal Venice

American, Steakhouse

$$$

Chef/owner Josiah Citrin makes a striking impression with this attractive grill, where nearly everything is cooked over the fire. Though the menu is inspired by a backyard barbecue, the décor is a contemporary mix of concrete walls, beige booths and modern artwork. Steaks sourced from Brandt Farms and Snake River Farms, grilled ribeyes, Berkshire pork chops and Jidori chicken are served alongside pastas and veggies that follow the seasons. Think coal-roasted carrots with black pepper honey or tagliatelle with cherry tomatoes. The bar area is a constant hive of activity thanks to happy hour spe

Gjelina

Contemporary

In more than a decade, this buzzy restaurant has spawned a to-go counter, highly popular bakery and cookbook. The ambience is ceaselessly upbeat, resulting in a scene that is a major draw among pretty young things.Brick floors and creeping vines fashion a picturesque, garden-like setting that is an idyllic match for their simply prepared Mediterranean menu of pizzas and shared plates like saffron spaghetti with bottarga, confit tomato, and garlic or grilled hanger steak with a rhubarb chimichurri. Vegetables, many sourced locally, are an absolute must with winning options like Japanese sweet p

Cobi's

Asian · Bib

The pink building with green trim is the first sign that Cobi's will charm you, and then there's the dining room, where frilly, floral touches (Pink wallpaper! Mismatched tables and chairs!) and a patio with more flowers set the scene for a lively atmosphere. Discover Thai and Malaysian delights along with other influences on this broad Southeast Asian menu. Start with dumplings, satay or curry puffs, those crispy triangular shells filled with curried split peas and potatoes sided by pickled onion and tamarind ketchup. From there, pick a curry or a wood-grilled main dish such as grilled prawns

Chulita

mexican

With its mod Mexican good looks and its Venice location not far from the beach, Chulita is primed for sunny SoCal days. Tacos are served all day at this spot where Oaxacan-style, California-influenced fare rules. Slake your thirst with a tequila or mezcal, then tuck into a starter, such as the quesadilla de calabaza, made from dark masa, filled with Oaxacan queso and garnished with pipián de calabaza. Tender barbacoa takes it up a notch. Tortillas are made in house, and tacos are always a good idea. Order the tinga de pollo, filled with juicy chicken, or go straight for the steak taco with its

Hatchet Hall

American, Contemporary

$$$

This lively Culver West spot is always in full swing, starting with the sprawling, pergola-shaded patio that rallies groups when the weather is right. Beyond lies an equally ample dining room with vintage accents like tufted leather banquettes and an L-shaped bar. The lengthy menu highlights a broad range of classics from across the South and, rightly so, biscuits, seasonal vegetables and plenty of pork are given due billing. Deviled eggs, pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes channel all the comfort of an old-fashioned picnic. Entrees, which are often easy to share, cover land and sea, thou

Seline

Californian, Contemporary

$$$$

You might not expect to be served ice cream in the middle of savory courses, but at Chef Dave Beran's Seline, surprises are the hallmark of a deeply personal meal. His ambitious tasting menu has high-concept underpinnings, meditating on themes like the progression of the seasons. A meal may begin with the likes of a miniature garden of edible succulents in a "soil" of caraway rye crumbs, dusted with a fine cauliflower snow. Black cod infused with wild bay laurel, paired with mussel cream and fennel offers classic sophistication, while lamb loin with burnt strawberry jus and wild greens shows a

Electric Bleu

French Contemporary, Californian

$$$

Chef/owner Craig Hopson's Electric Bleu is indeed buzzy; this California-meets-French bistro in Mar Vista draws a crowd for its likeable plates. Seating at the bar, counter and tables is tight and a hot ticket, so make reservations (especially on weekends) to savor starters like sauteed, foraged chanterelles with parmesan, parsnips and Treviso tardivo, or entrees such as duck breast with dates, saffron and green olives. Pick and choose from the à la carte offerings or go for the prix fixe with plates prepped in the open kitchen for all to see. Desserts, like their local lime tart with whipped
