Chef Anthony Schauer, who trained in top houses in northern Alsace, and his wife, cheerfully welcome you to their tasteful, contemporary restaurant, which provides the perfect foil to fresh, gutsy, seasonal fare with a bistronomic slant, such as seared seabream, white asparagus, kaesknepfle and a foamy hollandaise sauce, or a piece of French beef, veg, piping-hot crunchy fries and a béarnaise sauce. The chef favours premium ingredients, local whenever possible and concocts primarily traditional recipes with a welcome hint of creative modernity. For example, he proposes a new take of the familiar flammkuchen or adds a puff pastry Wellington-inspired spin to local venison, flanked by a gloriously velvety game sauce. The menu changes frequently, to the delight of the (numerous) regulars.

Remaining true to the Südliche Weinstraße, Sandra Bernhard and Jochen Sitter moved from Birkweiler to this 300 year-old former coaching house, which they run with great dedication and charm. The chef cooks traditional and modern, but above all, flavoursome fare. Dishes include classics such as pan-friend black pudding and Saumagen (stuffed pig’s stomach).
