Where to Base
Isabel Segunda, the island's administrative center, is the most practical base for hotels, offering concentrated amenities and transport links. For beach-focused stays, the eastern end near Red Beach, Blue Beach, and Caracas Beach provides direct access to world-class shores. However, verify accessibility as some former Navy lands remain restricted due to environmental cleanup.
Getting Around
Vieques lacks a major commercial airport; visitors typically arrive via small aircraft or ferry from the main island of Puerto Rico. Once on the island, transportation is limited. Renting a car or using taxis is essential for navigating the seven barrios and reaching remote beaches, as public transit is minimal.
Best Season
The dry season from December to April offers the best weather for beach activities and wildlife viewing. Summer months bring higher humidity and hurricane risks. Since parts of the island are still undergoing environmental remediation, check current access statuses for specific beaches and trails before booking.
