Naut Aran

Naut Aran is a municipality in eastern Aran, Catalonia, notable for being the second largest in the region by surface area. Formed in 1967 through the merger of Arties, Salardú, Gessa, Tredòs, and Bagergue, it retains unique decentralized municipal privileges. As the source of both the Garonne and Noguera Pallaresa rivers, it offers a pristine natural setting. The town hall is located in Salardú, while the C-28 road connects the valley to the rest of Spain via the Port de la Bonaigua pass, though winter access can be challenging.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Base yourself in Salardú, where the town hall is located, or in Arties and Garòs. These areas serve as central hubs for exploring the decentralized municipal entities like Gessa, Tredòs, and Bagergue, offering convenient access to the valley's scattered attractions and natural beauty.

Getting Around

There is no local airport. Access is via the C-28 road linking to Vielha and continuing over the Port de la Bonaigua (2072m) to Alt Àneu. Note that higher stretches of this road are impassable in winter. With a population of around 1,902, the vast 225.8 km² area is best explored by car or private transfer.

Best Season

Summer is ideal for hiking and visiting the river sources. Winter offers stunning snowy landscapes but the C-28 road may be closed due to snow, isolating the valley from the rest of Spain until the tunnel or cleared routes are available. The unique Aran culture and serene mountain atmosphere are accessible year-round.

Restaurant€€6.3 km

Located alongside a main road, El Niu occupies a stone house with an interior featuring traditional mountain decor, including an open fire, skis, snowshoes etc, plus a notable profusion of wood. The à la carte, traditional in composition but with added French touches, is enhanced by interesting daily specials that the female owner “sings” to every guest (traditional country pâté, leek pudding with a cep mushroom and black truffle sauce, pig trotter stew with snails etc).

Era Coquèla

Restaurant€€8.2 km

Over time, this unpretentious restaurant, which takes its name from an iron pan that is typical of this valley, has developed into a culinary reference in the area. Its contemporary cuisine skilfully blends in harmoniously with more traditional dishes such as snails “a la llauna” and the hearty Aranese “olla” soup. Choose between the à la carte and two set menus: one attractively priced lunchtime option and a second more elaborate version called Garona.
