Montefrío

Montefrío, located in the province of Granada, is a municipality steeped in history. Once a key frontier fortress for the Moors in the 15th century, it sits strategically between the Sierra de Priego and Sierra Parapanda ranges. Today, its economy remains agrarian, centered on olive cultivation and dairy processing. For hotel travelers, the town offers a quiet, authentic Andalusian experience. The main road is lined with independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, leading to the Plaza Virgen de Los Remedios and Plaza de España. Key attractions include the ruins of a Moorish castle at the highest point and the unique round church, the only one of its kind in Spain, believed to be converted from an old mosque. Nearby, the vast archaeological site of Las Peñas de Los Gitanos features prehistoric tombs and Roman and Visigothic remains. With a population of around 6,688, it provides a peaceful retreat with a continental Mediterranean climate.
