Where to Base
Base yourself in the town center for easy access to the Kataragama Temple and local pilgrimage atmosphere, or choose accommodations near the edge of Yala National Park to combine spiritual visits with wildlife safaris. The town is surrounded by jungle, offering a serene environment.
Getting Around
There is no airport in Kataragama. Travelers typically arrive from Colombo, located 228 km away. Public transportation and road infrastructure have improved since the 1950s. Taxis or hired cars are recommended for navigating between the town, temples, and Yala National Park.
Best Season
The town is active year-round due to its religious significance. However, planning around major Hindu and Buddhist festivals is advisable, as these periods see increased pilgrim traffic. Hotel availability may be tighter during peak religious seasons, so early booking is recommended for frequent travelers.
