Juba

Juba, the capital and largest city of South Sudan, sits on the banks of the White Nile and serves as the capital of Central Equatoria State. Established in the early 1920s by the Church Missionary Society, the city has evolved significantly since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 and South Sudan's independence in 2011. Although there have been discussions about moving the capital to Ramciel, Juba remains the active political and administrative hub. With a metropolitan area spanning 336 square kilometers, it offers a unique blend of historical roots and modern diplomatic activity. For frequent travelers, Juba represents a critical node for business and humanitarian engagement in the region, characterized by its strategic riverside location and growing infrastructure.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

It is advisable to choose hotels in the central district or near government and diplomatic zones. Given the compact nature of the city center (52 km²), most key facilities, including international organizations and business hubs, are concentrated within easy reach. This proximity minimizes transit time and enhances security and convenience for short stays.

Getting Around

Access is primarily via Juba International Airport. Within the city, transportation relies heavily on taxis and private vehicles due to limited public transit options. Given the urban layout and road conditions, pre-arranged transfers are recommended for efficiency and safety. While the White Nile offers scenic views, water transport is not a primary mode of daily commuting for travelers.

Best Season

South Sudan experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The rainy season, typically from May to October, can cause road flooding and travel disruptions. The dry season, from November to April, offers better road conditions and is generally more suitable for business travel and outdoor activities. Travelers should plan their itineraries to align with drier months for smoother logistics.
