Where to Base
Stay in the town center or near the river mouth for easy access to galleries, shops, and walking tracks. This central location minimizes the need for driving and allows you to enjoy the scenic views of the Tasman Sea and the Hokitika River on foot.
Getting Around
There is no local airport; the nearest major hub is Greymouth, just 40km north. Once in Hokitika, most attractions are within walking distance. Renting a car is recommended for exploring the wider West Coast region, but the town itself is very walkable.
Best Season
Visit in summer for stable weather and clear views of Mount Cook. Winter brings rain and cold but fewer crowds. Spring and autumn offer mild conditions ideal for hiking and photography along the coast.
