Gengenbach

Gengenbach is a charming city on the western edge of the Black Forest, renowned for its picturesque medieval old town and unique Alemannic Fasnacht carnival traditions. With a population of around 11,000, it offers a tranquil escape from urban bustle, ideal for travelers seeking cultural immersion and historical atmosphere. The town is famous for its world's largest advent calendar, displayed on the 18th-century town hall. While it lacks major international airport connectivity, its proximity to Offenburg, Freiburg, and Strasbourg makes it accessible for regional exploration. The area is best visited during the carnival season or winter for festive lights, though the mild summers are also pleasant for walking the historic streets.

Before choosing where to stay

Base in the Historic Center

Stay in the medieval old town (Altstadt) for the best experience. The narrow, picturesque streets place you within walking distance of key sights, including the historic town hall and carnival landmarks. This central location allows you to immerse yourself in the town's traditional atmosphere and easily explore the charming architecture on foot.

Transport and Connectivity

Gengenbach does not have a direct major international airport connection. The most efficient route involves flying into Frankfurt or Strasbourg, then taking a train or bus via Offenburg or Baden-Baden. Nearby regional hubs include Freiburg, Karlsruhe, and the French border town of Strasbourg, which is twinned with Gengenbach. Public transport links are adequate for regional travel, but renting a car offers greater flexibility for exploring the Black Forest.

Best Time to Visit

The town is most vibrant during the traditional Alemannic Fasnacht (carnival), where locals wear carved wooden masks and use wooden 'Ratsche' clappers. Winter is also special for viewing the world's largest advent calendar, which uses the 24 windows of the 18th-century town hall. Summer offers pleasant weather for strolling through the historic center and enjoying the Black Forest surroundings. Avoid peak carnival dates if you prefer quiet, as the town becomes crowded with visitors.

The sort of restaurant you would love to have in your own neighbourhood. This long-standing family-run establishment delights guests with classics like cordon bleu, as well as contemporary creations such as scallops with pumpkin, curry and lemongrass – and, of course, excellent charcoal-grilled steaks. The menu, which features plenty of comforting soul food dishes, is complemented by friendly service and an inviting setting that makes it easy to linger. In summer, the terrace is divine. Unsurprisingly, this charming spot is also a popular choice for weddings.

This is the restaurant of the chic hotel of the same name, which provides the historical backdrop for your meal. The tasteful dining area is done out with high-end furnishings and a modern eye. Staff are friendly and professional as they set about serving you fine Baden classics, modernised French dishes, which you can choose à la carte or combine into a set menu – a vegetarian version is also available. The "Taste Menu" comprising six or seven small courses is also an excellent recommendation. In summer, the garden is magical!
