Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Given its compact size, most accommodations are clustered in the town center or along the Rio de las Vueltas riverbank. Staying here allows for easy walking access to trailheads for Fitz Roy and Torre, as well as local dining options, while immersing guests in the quiet, mountainous ambiance.

Getting Around

El Chaltén has no airport. Travelers must fly into El Calafate (FTE) and then take a bus or rental car north for approximately 220 kilometers. Once in town, the compact layout means most exploration is done on foot, making it ideal for hikers.

Best Season

The town is inhabited year-round, but the summer months (December to February) offer the most stable weather for extensive trekking. Winter brings significant snow and ice, so travelers should ensure their accommodation provides adequate heating and comfort for cold conditions.
