Where to Base
Accommodations range from traditional stone houses in the older, lower southern end to modern apartment blocks in the northern tourist zone. For an authentic experience, choose lodging away from the main road. For convenience and proximity to restaurants and the Saturday market, the northern development area offers more concentrated facilities.
Getting Around
Motor traffic is barred beyond Capileira, making it the highest village reachable by public transport. A limited national park bus service operates in summer, and regular routes connect to Granada and Alcútar. The village is compact and best explored on foot, with tracks leading north to historical sites like La Cebadilla.
Best Season
Summer is the peak season for hiking and accessing mountain refuges, with active bus services. Winter attracts skiers to the nearby Sierra Nevada slopes. The village remains accessible year-round, offering a chance to experience the local Saturday market and the distinct high-altitude climate of the Alpujarras.
