Where to Base
Given the island's small 8 km² size, accommodations are primarily situated along the coastlines facing key dive sites. Choosing hotels near areas like Lekuan or Fukui provides direct access to the park's renowned coral reefs and diverse marine life, including giant clams and butterfly fish, ensuring a seamless transition from relaxation to underwater exploration.
Airport Connection
Bunaken has no airport; travelers must first fly into Manado. From Manado, access to the island is via boat transfers, typically speedboats or ferries departing from local ports. As Bunaken is administratively part of Manado, the journey involves connecting from the city center to the harbor before embarking on the short sea crossing to the island.
Best Season
With water temperatures consistently ranging between 27 and 29°C, Bunaken is suitable for diving and snorkeling year-round. The northeasterly currents and lunar-related counter-currents create ideal conditions for marine biodiversity, particularly on the south side of the island. Travelers should monitor current patterns to optimize sightings of the park's extensive fish and coral diversity.
