Brasilia

Brasília, the capital of Brazil and seat of the Federal District, stands as a masterpiece of modernist urban planning. Founded on April 21, 1960, by President Juscelino Kubitschek to replace Rio de Janeiro as the national capital, it was designed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, and Joaquim Cardozo, with landscape architecture by Roberto Burle Marx. The city is laid out in the shape of an airplane, with its 'fuselage' being the Monumental Axis, a grand avenue flanked by parks, and the 'cockpit' housing the Praça dos Três Poderes, where the three branches of government converge. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 for its architectural significance, Brasília was later named a 'City of Design' by UNESCO in 2017. As Brazil's third-most populous city with 2.8 million residents, it boasts the highest GDP per capita among major Latin American cities. The city hosts 124 foreign embassies and serves as a key hub for international business and diplomacy. Its international airport connects it to all major Brazilian cities and select global destinations, making it a convenient base for travelers exploring the country's central-west region.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

For hotel travelers, the designated Hotel Sector is the most strategic base, offering proximity to the Embassy Sector and Banking Sector, ideal for diplomatic and corporate guests. Staying along the Monumental Axis provides easy access to major government buildings and cultural sites. The city's planned layout ensures that accommodations are well-integrated with business districts, minimizing commute times for frequent flyers attending meetings or events.

Getting Around & Airport

The city's international airport is the third busiest in Brazil, providing robust connections to all major domestic hubs and select international destinations. Transport from the airport to the Plano Piloto (the original planned city center) is efficient. The city's unique grid-like sector system makes navigation straightforward via taxi or public transit. As a host city for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, Brasília maintains high standards in transportation infrastructure, ensuring smooth arrivals and departures for travelers.

Best Season

Located in the Brazilian Highlands, Brasília enjoys a pleasant climate year-round, though visitors should be aware of distinct wet and dry seasons. The city's role as the political and commercial heart means weekdays are busy with government and diplomatic activities, while weekends offer a quieter atmosphere for exploring its UNESCO-listed modernist architecture and expansive parks. Its designation as a UNESCO City of Design adds cultural depth to any visit, making it an appealing destination regardless of the season, provided travelers pack appropriately for the highland weather.
