Where to Base
The western tip, known as Bastimentos, contains private residences and is visible from Bocas town. However, most of the island is covered by the Bastimentos National Marine Park and the Red Frog Island Resort's Nature Preserve. For hotel travelers, staying near the resort or park entrances provides the best balance of access to nature, tranquility, and essential services, avoiding the busier main island.
Getting Around
There is no airport on Bastimentos Island. The primary connection is via water taxi from Bocas Town, taking approximately 10 minutes. Once on the island, transportation is limited to walking or small boats, making it perfect for travelers who prefer a slow-paced, car-free environment. This proximity allows for easy day trips while maintaining a secluded atmosphere.
Best Season
The island is accessible year-round, but the dry season from December to April offers the best weather for diving, snorkeling, and beach activities. With a low population density and fewer tourists compared to Bocas Town, it is an excellent destination for those seeking solitude and nature. The protected marine park ensures clear waters and rich biodiversity throughout the year.
