Banjarmasin

Banjarmasin, located on the island of Borneo, serves as the historical and cultural heart of South Kalimantan. Known as the 'City of a Thousand Rivers,' this delta metropolis sits at the confluence of the Barito and Martapura rivers, offering a unique landscape of waterways and traditional Banjarese architecture. Although the provincial capital was legally moved to Banjarbaru in February 2022, Banjarmasin remains the largest city in the province and a key hub for Kalimantan. The city covers approximately 98.37 km² and is home to nearly 682,000 residents. For hotel travelers, the city center and areas near the river confluence provide the best access to cultural sites, floating markets, and local cuisine. The broader urban agglomeration, known as Banjarbakula, extends into neighboring regencies, but the core city offers the most concentrated amenities for visitors.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Stay in the city center or along the Barito River for optimal access to cultural sites, floating markets, and dining. These areas are the hub of local activity and provide easy access to the city's main attractions.

Getting Around

Given its delta location, water transport is a unique way to experience the city. Taxis are available for land travel. Note that the new provincial capital, Banjarbaru, is nearby and accessible by road.

Best Season

The city is accessible year-round. The dry season (September to February) offers better road conditions for exploring. While the rainy season raises water levels, it enhances the unique riverine atmosphere of the city.
