Accra

Accra, the capital and largest city of Ghana, sits on the southern coast along the Gulf of Guinea. As the economic and administrative hub of the Greater Accra Region, it serves as the anchor for a major metropolitan area with significant international influence. The city's architecture reflects its rich history, blending 19th-century colonial structures from former British, Dutch, and Danish settlements with modern skyscrapers. Designated as a 'Gamma-' global city, Accra offers a vibrant urban experience, combining historical depth with contemporary energy, making it a key destination for business and leisure travelers alike.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Accra’s main passenger airport is ACC, Accra International Airport, formerly Kotoka. There is no airport train or metro. For a first arrival, use a hotel transfer, ride-hailing app such as Uber, Bolt or Yango, or an airport taxi; agree the fare before leaving if not app-based. ACC to Osu/Ridge/central Accra is usually about 20-40 minutes, but can be longer in peak traffic. Airport City hotels are about 5-10 minutes away. Public buses or trotros are possible from nearby roads but are not the easiest with luggage.

Around the city

Accra has no metro. Most visitors combine ride-hailing, taxis and short walks within areas like Osu or Labone. Trotros are cheap shared minibuses but routes are informal and stops can be hard for newcomers. Aayalolo/QBS buses run on limited corridors such as Accra-Amasaman, Ofankor, Adentan and Kasoa, but they are not a full tourist network. There is no must-get tourist transit pass; carry small cash, confirm destinations before boarding, and allow extra time for traffic.

Loyalty program coverage

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

The central business district and Osu area are prime locations for hotels, offering proximity to commerce, dining, and nightlife. Jamestown provides a historic atmosphere near the original forts, while other municipal districts within the Greater Accra area offer quieter residential options for those seeking a more relaxed stay away from the city center.

Getting Around

Traffic in Accra can be heavy, so allow ample time for commuting. Taxis and ride-hailing services are the primary modes of transport. Since the capital area is divided into multiple independent municipal districts, travel times between zones can vary significantly. It is essential to plan routes in advance and account for potential congestion when moving between different parts of the metropolitan area.

Best Season

Accra enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, typically from November to March, offers less rainfall and comfortable conditions, making it the ideal time for sightseeing and outdoor activities. While the rainy season sees more precipitation, it attracts fewer tourists, potentially offering a more serene experience for budget-conscious travelers willing to navigate occasional showers.
