Staying in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe, a landlocked nation in Southeast Africa, is renowned for Victoria Falls and its rich history, including the Great Zimbabwe ruins. The capital, Harare, and the second-largest city, Bulawayo, serve as primary business hubs. With English as a widely spoken official language alongside Shona and Ndebele, the country offers diverse cultural experiences. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, understanding the local accommodation landscape, transport connections from international gateways, and the footprint of major loyalty programs is essential for navigating stays effectively while exploring the region's natural and historical attractions.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

As a landlocked country, Zimbabwe's main international gateways include Harare and Victoria Falls airports. Domestic connectivity relies on road networks linking major cities like Bulawayo and areas along the Zambezi River. Travelers should verify visa requirements well in advance, as regulations can change; always consult the nearest consulate for the most current official entry information.

Accommodation Layout: City vs. Region

The hotel landscape is distinctly regional. Harare and Bulawayo offer a concentration of urban business hotels suitable for conferences and administrative travel. In contrast, Victoria Falls Town and its surroundings feature resort-style accommodations leveraging natural attractions. Travelers should choose their base depending on whether the focus is business or leisure, with inter-city movement often requiring domestic flights or long-distance buses.

Loyalty Landscape

Major global hotel chains operate in Zimbabwe, though coverage varies by location. In commercial hubs like Harare, international brands typically have a strong footprint, facilitating points accumulation and benefit usage for frequent flyers. However, in remote tourist areas, local boutique hotels or resorts may dominate. It is advisable to check the specific list of participating hotels for your loyalty program in your target city before travel to ensure benefits are applicable.

Trip preparation

Health

Use this as reference, not medical advice. Drink bottled/treated water, be careful with street food and hand hygiene; cholera transmission has been reported. Malaria risk is countrywide, so avoid bites. Avoid swimming/wading in untreated freshwater because schistosomiasis occurs. Plan for strong sun, heat, dehydration, safari/tick/tsetse exposure, and some highland/urban elevations above 1,000m.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 4-6 weeks before travel. Be current on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, influenza and COVID-19. CDC commonly recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid for Zimbabwe; cholera vaccine may be considered for higher-risk itineraries, and rabies pre-exposure vaccine for animal/safari/remote exposure. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Zimbabwe itself and is not required from the U.S.; proof is required for travelers aged 9+ months arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is available but not universal. Econet advertises local eSIM activation by QR code and also sells data bundles; NetOne and Telecel remain major local mobile options, usually via physical SIM/data bundles and shops. For the smoothest arrival, check device compatibility, bring an unlocked phone, expect registration ID checks, and use Wi-Fi or an international travel eSIM as backup if you need data before buying locally.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-23).
