Health
Reference info only, not medical advice. Use bottled/treated water over tap water, choose well-cooked food, and wash hands. Malaria risk is present throughout Malawi; mosquitoes can also transmit other illnesses, so use bite prevention. Avoid untreated freshwater exposure where schistosomiasis/bilharzia risk exists, including parts of Lake Malawi. Heat is strongest in low-lying areas such as the Lower Shire; highlands like Zomba, Nyika and Viphya can be cold at night.
Vaccinations
Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 1 month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, flu and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid for many travelers; hepatitis B, rabies, cholera and malaria prevention may be discussed based on itinerary and activities. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Malawi itself, but proof is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from yellow-fever-risk countries, including airport transits over 12 hours.
eSIM / connectivity
eSIM is available through international travel-eSIM providers, but public visitor information from local operators does not show broad local tourist eSIM support. For the most dependable local option, buy a registered prepaid physical SIM/data bundle from Airtel Malawi or TNM in airports or city shops; bring a passport and check rural coverage for parks and lakeshore areas.
