Staying in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is an overseas department and region of France located in the Caribbean. Comprising six inhabited islands including Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, it serves as an integral part of the French Republic and the European Union. The capital, Basse-Terre, sits on the western coast of Basse-Terre Island, while the economic hub, Pointe-à-Pitre, is located on Grande-Terre. The region offers a unique blend of French administrative structure and vibrant Creole culture. With the Euro as its currency and open settlement rights for EU citizens, it provides a seamless travel experience for those familiar with European standards, while offering distinct Caribbean landscapes ranging from volcanic rainforests to coral atolls.

Entry & getting around

Regional Structure & Accommodation Layout

Guadeloupe consists of multiple islands, with travel typically centered around Pointe-à-Pitre or Basse-Terre on Grande-Terre. Accommodations range from urban business hotels to coastal resorts. Since inter-island transport relies on ferries or short flights, it is advisable to choose a base near your primary activities to avoid frequent cross-island transit.

Main Gateways & Transport

Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport (PTP) is the primary gateway, connecting Europe and neighboring Caribbean islands. Local transport relies heavily on car rentals, as public transportation is limited. Ferries should be booked in advance for trips to Marie-Galante or the Îles des Saintes. Domestic air services connect major islands but have limited frequency.

Entry & Visa Requirements

As an overseas department of France, Guadeloupe follows French and EU entry regulations. EU citizens can settle and work freely. Non-EU travelers require a valid passport and may need a Schengen visa or specific visas for French overseas territories. Always check with the local French consulate for the latest official visa requirements before traveling.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

As part of France, Guadeloupe has a significant presence of international hotel chains, particularly Marriott, Hilton, and Accor. These brands generally offer standard points earning and redemption experiences. Local boutique hotels and guesthouses may not participate in global loyalty programs, so travelers should verify specific points policies at the time of booking.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Guadeloupe is tropical and low altitude; heat, sun, dehydration, beach/boat safety and rain-slick hikes are practical concerns. Use safe food/water habits, especially when eating outside resorts. Prevent mosquito bites because dengue and Zika are listed travel risks; avoid floodwater/muddy water after heavy rain and avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water. La Soufriere is about 1,467 m, so altitude illness is not a typical visitor issue.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC lists routine vaccines, including MMR, flu, polio, Tdap/DTaP, varicella and shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers, Hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers of all ages, and typhoid for most travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal-contact risk. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended; it is not required for direct travel from the U.S., but a certificate is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is practical for most visitors with compatible unlocked phones. Orange Travel sells Guadeloupe eSIM plans and states service uses Orange and Digicel partner networks. Local mobile operators include Orange Caraibe, Digicel, SFR Caraibe/Outremer Telecom and Free Caraibe; check current prepaid/eSIM availability in shops or online before arrival, especially if you need a local number. Coverage is best around towns, resorts and main roads, with weaker spots possible on hikes and smaller islands.
